Hawaiian Music Workshops through November

 

 

Come enjoy workshops presented by Hawaiian music scholar/kumu mele Aaron Mahi, Hawaiian language scholar/translator Puakea Nogelmeier, ‘ukulele virtuoso Gordon Mark, and Hawaiian music icon Bill Kaiwa.

Part I: October 17, 10:00am to 12:00pm

Part II: November 21, 10:00am to 12:00pm

Workshops will cover composers, history, and meanings of songs sung by famed Paniolo musicians of various ranches.  Workshop will be presented in “talk story” (Kukakuka) style in the kanikapila (Let’s play music) tradition.  Bring your favorite instrument and your sweet sounding voice.

October 21, 6:00 to 8:00pm

Workshop will cover old and new chants, their setting, style, vocabulary, poetic structure, and imagery.


Gordon Mark – ’Ukulele Virtuoso. ’Ukulele Workshop.

November 7, 10:00am to 12:00pm

Workshop will explore picking melody and “fill” techniques.  Student should know basic chords (major, minor, 7th).  Tape recorders allowed.  No video recorders.

Bill Kaiwa – Hawaiian Music Icon. ‘Ukulele Workshop.

November 7, 10:00am to 12:00pm

Workshop will cover simple chords, lyrics, and pronunciation of “old time” Hawaiian songs.
